Mis «no negociables»

English version:

Did you know about the 21-day theory to create a habit?

In today’s post I will delve into this 21-day theory with the intention of helping you achieve your professional and personal goals.

So you can create effective and lasting habits over time.

21 days to create a habit

Wiliam James, the father of modern psychology and philosopher, published an article in 1890 entitled «The Habit».

Here he explains the plasticity of the nervous system and the brain through his theory of 21 days to create a habit.

If we repeat the same action for 21 days, the brain passes it to our conscious part, converts it into learning and finally stores it as a habit.

Several studies question the theory of 21 days to create a habit

According to the proposal of psychologist William James, our brain learns and stores a habit in a 21-day process.

This theory is still valid today and has been supported by numerous researches.

Numerous doctors and scientists affirm that 21 days is the time necessary for the cells of our organism to regenerate, that is, to record new information.

Likewise, other studies state that 21 days are required to create the habit and 90 days more to convert it and integrate it as part of a lifestyle.

In summary, it is said that 66 to 90 days are necessary to create a habit.

Each body is different and repetition is the key to creating a habit

It is necessary to take into account that every body is different and not all of us learn at the same pace, what is certain is that repetition is the key to creating a habit.

I will tell you how I acquired some healthy habits with the 21-day theory.

When I learned about the 21-day theory to create a habit in 2014, I started to put it into practice to improve my overall wellness.

For example, having better nutrition, opting for natural medicine instead of conventional medicine, exercising regularly and focusing on my mental and emotional development.

My non-negotiables

Also, today I can say that they are part of my lifestyle, because they are some of those «non-negotiable» activities that are part of my day-to-day life.

When I say, «non-negotiable», I mean that they are activities that I could no longer exclude from my life because they are part of me and bring me the greatest well-being, that is why it is non-negotiable to leave aside everything that brings me integral well-being.

On May 1, 2022, that is, 21 days ago, I started with the habit of the breathing technique and cold showers taught by the WIM HOF Method, which I learned thanks to the certified instructors of this method:

☀️ Sanjay:
☀️ Ferdinand:
☀️ Leandre:

In this video on my YouTube channel I tell you the experience of my first ice bath with the WIM HOF method

Every day in the morning at the same time I have done the breaths and then the cold water shower

Every day I noticed an increase in vitality, well-being and control over my body.

Also, some days my reptilian brain wanted to make me break the routine I was starting to create, however, I have not allowed it, I have managed to overcome thoughts like «I better sleep a little more» or «I could do it later».

Commitment is the key to seeing the benefits of any healthy habit you wish to acquire.

Breathing is magic, especially if you know how to do it to get a benefit

Benefits of the Wim Hof Method

The practice of the specific breathing exercises of the Wim Hof Method focus on deep, rhythmic inhalations and exhalations, described by Wim as «controlled hyperventilation or powerful breathing».

And they are followed by a holding time, in which the breath is held for a set amount of time.

By practicing breathing exercises, more energy is released.

This has a positive influence on the nervous system and modifies various physiological responses in your favor.

Also, the breathing exercises of the Wim Hof method, in combination with cold showers or ice baths, bring great benefits to the body, e.g. stress reduction, improved sleep and sports performance.

You also gain greater concentration, clarity and creativity.

And, above all, you feel more in control of yourself, your life and your emotions.

It is cold therapy and mindset training in conjunction with breathing techniques.

At the same time, It helps you to become more resilient to everyday stress, mentally and physiologically, and to feel more in control.

The Wim Hof method has also been shown to reduce symptoms of diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, asthma, sarcoidosis, vasculitis and various autoimmune diseases.

For more information about the scientific studies that prove these claims, you can visit the WIM HOF METHOD website.

How to acquire a habit in 21 days – Seinfeld Method

The Seinfeld Method is a strategy that promotes the creation of habits and routines using a fairly simple system.

I share it with you in case you find it useful and practical.

  • Buy a large wall calendar where you can visualize the whole year.Stick it on a wall that you can’t stop looking at every day.

    Get a red marker.

When you have achieved your goal for the day, you put a big red X over the day on the calendar.

After several days you will have a chain.

Seeing the chain turn into a sequence will motivate you to continue.

Don’t look at the results, just keep going. Even if you think you are not seeing results, they are always there. Remember that all change is progressive.

I recommend you to read my previous post: Reconoce tus miedos y congélalos / Recognize your fears and freeze them

After 21 days of doing an action repeatedly you will have acquired a habit and after 90 days you will have transformed this habit into a lifestyle, therefore, it will be very difficult to break.

Are you encouraged by the idea of starting with the 21-day theory to create a habit?

What habit do you want to change or improve?

Remember that you can, as long as you want to.

If you found this post useful, share it with others so they can benefit from it.
